You wouldn’t imagine working behind a desk could be a dangerous thing for your health. We usually associate danger with jobs that could bring an immediate threat to your wellbeing, such as becoming a fire-fighter, or working on the front line of the police force. But using a computer every day can have unwanted consequences on your vision if adequate precautions are taken to look after your vision.

If you’re the human resources manager for your work force, you may usually become the first port of call for employees who want to find out more about what your company offers with regards to a corporate eyecare policy. But what can you do to help raise awareness of it in the workplace?

Understand what rules and regulations are in place
Employers are required to provide every member of their workforce who uses visual display units (VDU’s) on a regular basis the option to have a subsidised eye test if they believe that they are encountering problems with their vision. This requirement is part of the 1992 Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) regulations laid out by the Health and Safety Executive.

Offer employees the choice of various styles of frames
Although the object of corporate eyewear is to provide assistance when looking at things, do not underestimate the influence design and style has on the glasses wearer. Employees will only find glasses useful if they want to wear something that looks stylish.

Allow employees the chance to enjoy additional benefits
Some corporate eyecare providers allow members the chance to benefit from money off vouchers, the opportunity of utilising 2-for-1 deals or simply the choice of upgrading to designer frames. These offers do not only benefit the employer, but also employees because it allows them more flexibility when looking after their ocular health.

Protect any drivers on your workforce
Over a third of road traffic accidents on Britain’s roads are reported to involve people who are driving as part of their every day jobs. Making sure that drivers have their vision checked at least every two years can help reduce any risk to their driving. It also helps promote an inclusive corporate eyecare policy that looks after all employees, not just those behind desks.

These are just a selection of different tips you as a human resources manager can implement to help increase the awareness of your company’s corporate eyecare policy. If you need any more information, the Health and Safety Executive’s website provides all of the governments guidelines with what companies should be doing to look after their workforce’s eyecare.
