While the sexed up-ness of celebrities and super-star athletes will always be at the forefront of culture, there has recently been a recent resurgence in the appeal of the young smart ones. This is great news for the natural nerd but the average Joe may need a little help. Don’t worry, there are a few easy steps you can take towards looking like a genius without actually knowing very much.
Learn random facts
How great does your friend sound when you are talking about some obscure actor from the ‘30s and she chimes in with a quip about the atmosphere surrounding the film unions at the time? That could be you. Chances are she knows very little about any other history surrounding that particular topic, but the little fact was enough to impress. Prepare yourself by learning a plethora of trivia information that has the potential to be useful. Sit on it until the right opportunity, and then when the conversation does turn that way, don’t cut your peers off overexcitedly with your facts, just wait until an opportune time and nonchalantly drop that knowledge all over them with confidence.
Wear glasses
Glasses make you look smart. Don’t think they look great on you? Find a pair that does. There are numerous shapes, sizes, and colours and there is most definitely something for you. If you actually need corrective lenses, opt for glasses over contacts. If you don’t need them, pick up a pair of non-prescription glasses, but be warned, if caught unnecessarily wearing a great pair of frames you will look like a fool.
Update your wardrobe
Don’t go for the geek look. Go for sophisticated smart. Find items that fit. Well-cut blazers and trousers go a long way. Forego the pocket protector in exchange for a subtle pocket square. Discover your style and stick with it. Don’t be boring but also don’t overdo it.
Take tips from friends and loved ones
They spend time with you every day. They know what you should toss from your closet and they know the things you say that make them cringe. Ask them for honest advice on the more subtle things you can change – and take the advice with grace!
Sit in front and speak up
If you are still in school, sit toward the front. Many learn more just from moving up a bit as it helps them concentrate, especially if they have vision problems. Get an eye test, get some glasses, and move forward. If you are in big work meetings, sit in a prominent spot. Just being seen is half the battle of being known. Along with that, talk. Speak with confidence about what you know. Don’t shy away from an opportunity to be heard.
Read and spend time with smart people
Sure, they will see that you are not as smart as them. Initially. But hanging around with intelligence will increase your overall knowledge. Also, read as much as you can. Nothing stimulates the mind like reading and writing. Read biographies of inspirational people. Read fantasy novels. Read Oprah’s Book Club. Just reading will help increase what you know, help with your vocabulary, help you to formulate competent arguments, and will help you to look smarter.
